I agree somewhat with Vicki. That last comment with the apprentice interview was in my opinion rude and inapropriate!! LOL "You're not a stylist yet so you can't do the snip snip." I know her and Sherilyn totally mean well, but.........a little more professionalism and courtesy would be appreciated.

Im a student at Empire Beauty School in Minnesota i was not really told about all that stuff when you in class good thing i search online that great because the show you the basic information about hair im happy im getting my license but Not the great techinques in the salons. Everyone is different at empire and you skip too much of the best stuff for making money i will love to be in a salon and be able to do more training on the styling and techinques. GREAT VIDEO

Very motivating! I am about 5 months out of school and fortunate enough to work in a very nice salon with an awesome mentor! He mentioned this website and I absolutely love it! I have learned so much in just the past hour it seems like. Since I am new out of school I am learning every day and I really need to keep better track of what I am learning. I am totally getting a notebook like the apprentice so I can be more organized about continuing my education!

Thanks!!! thats was awesome and inspiring :)

Good Job! Very good information and advice for new people in the industry. Just one important bit of information that wasn't touched on. For those considering becoming a commissioned stylist you should know up front if your potential employer intends to give you a W-2 or a 1099. I've noticed more salon owners are trying to get away with giving their employees a 1099 and leading them to believe they are doing them a favor when in fact they are doing them a disservice. This enables the salon owner to get away with not having to pay your taxes and creates a slightly more complicated and expensive tax preparation process for the stylist at the end of they year. If you are given a 1099 you are technically not an employee of the salon and the owner/manager then does not have the legal right to dictate to the employee a work schedule, time off, etc... as you are being treated as a self employed contractor. If the salon owner/manager wants to be able to have full control over you as an employee then they should be issuing you a W-2. Otherwise, if things go sour the stylist can sue the salon through the Department of Labor for failure to pay your taxes.

That was so great! You guys just gave this girl some good advertisement and she is still an apprentice. It's also good to see more than just the salon owners and moneymakers. Really brings back the drive in others as well. Good stuff. Thanx guys!

The lady is wrong about apprenticeships. It's for NEW students, not licensed cosmetologist. She's confusing apprenticeship with assistanceship.
